Since American housing costs have skyrocketed over the pass three decades, so owning a home in America is now more expensive than ever. 3D printed house could help put an end to America’s lack of affordable housing problem.
The average American home costs about $335,400 in year 2017 but this startup wants to make affordable housing possible with a 3D printer.
Apis Cor is a San Francisco based housing startup that is building homes with a mobile 3D printer. Unbelievable that this house was built in only one day and it only cost $10,000 all because of 3D printing. These 3D printer homes are the fastest of their kind and they are built to last for 175 years.
Here’s how they 3D houses were built:
First, the 3D printer is programmed to the home’s structure. It then applies cement layers to form the shape of the house. Fibreglass reinforcements are added and an insulation mixture.
Measuring at about 409 square feet, the home features an open layout with kitchen, bedroom and small bathroom. Apis Cor promises that they will be able to make homes in whatever shape desired.
Square homes would cost even less at about $8,870.
However, windows and interior designs are manually installed. The houses are usually finished in about 24hours.
Currently, about 40 million Americans were living in homes that they could not afford. 3D printers could change all of that by making affordable housing an option for everyone, hopefully the future will look a little brighter soon.
