This is a giant flame throwing spider built at the party. It’s called Arcadia. It was actually a DJ booth in a festival.
The big spiders is made of recycled jets, helicopters and cranes consisting of over 1,000 moving parts. It has got cranes, flame, cannons, lasers, lights and CO 2 systems.many systems have to work in harmony together to create the show. The Arcadia creates a 360-degree show. It is controlled remotely by 30 people. There are also people on it. There’s loads of people on the spider.
The giant spider is mostly made from recycled military scrap material. The big legs of the spider were taken from a government disposal yard up north in England and they were the Customs and Excise property. They were these giant cranes which were for scanning trucks and containers at ports and they are huge big machines.
The leg was the crane arm for these scanners, the scanners were cut and re-purposed to become the legs of the spider. The top muscles of the spider are helicopter fuselages. Those helicopters were used in various wars and ended up in a junkyard and we have taken them and done something really positive with them.
Some of Arcadia’s fire is also biodegradable with the use of biofuel to create some fire. We created the world’s first biofuel flame system using biofuel that is collected from chip fat, from restaurant and chip shops around Bristol. Then, processed into a special fuel that is used to create the fire.
They also got s gas system which creates fire so it releases either the liquid or the gas and we light it in the air to create massive fireballs. The eyes were afterburner units from Nimbus spy planes.
Some of the favourite DJs we have had Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Andy C, Skrillex, Chase & Status and the right down through the tiers. There’s some really underground guys.
The DJ booth was built from a TriStar Jetliner’s turbine rotors. Arcadia weighs 50 tons and is 50 feet tall. The fire can shoot 50 feet above the structure. There’s a team of riggers and also a team of crane drivers who drive the actual robotic cranes which are on the top. You will find a troupe of performers who actually hang on the structure, walk down it and get moved around in the space above people’s heads.
