Surgeons nowadays will be able to print 3D printed cartilage with this pen. Biopen can produce custom cartilage for joint pair surgeries. The pen’s ink is made out of a mixture of hydro-gel and stem cells.
During surgery, the biogel ink can be applied directly to bones. Exposure to ultraviolet light hardens and seals the gel. Stem cells in the biogel have a 97% survival rate. A team from St. Vincent’s hospital in Melbourne, Australia developed the biopen.
Bio-printed materials like the pen’s gel could revolutionized the field of tissue engineering.
