Many did not believe that insulin could be delivered orally due to the doubt that it could survive the onslaught of digestive juices resulting in an intended effect. However, Israeli scientists have developed an insulin pill for type 2 diabetes. The pill aims to gently reduce night-time blood glucose. Trials showed the pill created a night-time glucose reduction of nearly 6.5% effectively.
The pill follows the path of natural insulin produced in the pancreas and goes directly to the liver. Oral insulin if approved would likely become a multi-billion dollar company. Credit: Oramed Pharmaceuticals and webmd.
