In Australia, nearly 3,500 pedestrians in Australia are seriously injured each year. One main reason for this is the use of smartphones while crossing the road.
To solve this problem, an in-ground traffic lights could increase pedestrian safety at crosswalk.
A smart Tactile Paving was developed by Buro North in an effort to address this issue . The system uses LED lights enclosed in tactile paving slabs to signal when it is safe to walk. The lights are embedded so pedestrians see them even while looking at their phones.
This project is an attempt to modernise infrastructure and to keep up with an evolving society asking cities safer for everybody that crossing the roads.
